about

The Sympathetics formed in Santa Barbara via serendipity, before the great recession, and before they were un-young. Things were a little easier, money was less expensive, the oceans were abundant with fish, the mountains were green, they all had sand in their pants, and life itself was a success. Therefore, The Sympathetics happily, some might say purposefully, forfeited the burden of becoming a successful band on top of all that, performing outside of the mainstream on only the shittiest of unreliable equipment to play the least desirable of unattended gigs.

And so it goes with the sole record produced by the group. Sunny lo-pop, laid down in a little beach-side apartment, to an obsolete computer held together with cat hair, "mastered" on the renowned Dokorder 7100 1/4 inch tape machine, and pressed to CDs that today are used as drink coasters by discerning drink coaster collectors, this album has the sumptuous distinction of having sold roughly 12 copies. A gold record is one that sells 500,000. This one went greasy tin foil cheese burger wrapper. (The Spot, anyone?)

But popularity has no domain over aging memories made by the sea. Here is a snapshot of three pals having some good times; a Brazilian ex-pat and two landlubbers from North Dakota making a record in the warmth of Southern California. Because what else do you do in California when you are not sure what else to do?
